MIAMI – Travelers at Miami International Airport on Monday reported “smooth sailing” as the Memorial Day holiday weekend came to an end.
“We thought that the airport would be really crowded, but it’s not,” said traveler Carey White. “It’s been smooth sailing.”
Officials said more than 2.9 million people passed through TSA checkpoints on Friday, setting a record for the most travelers screened in a single day.
Many of those people were back at the airport on Monday to return home.
Officials at MIA said more than 160,000 people, on average, have been passing through every day since Friday, which is 10% more than what they saw last year.
Security lines appeared to be moving though and most of the flights on the board showed up as on-time.
Officials at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport also said they were expecting Monday to be one of its busiest days. They’ve been averaging a little more than 100,000 passengers per day.
