Surveillance video captures fiery fatal crash in Lauderhill

LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Surveillance video captured a major crash Thursday morning in Lauderhill that left a man dead and three other people hospitalized.

Authorities have identified the deceased man as 50-year-old Daryl Walker.

The two-vehicle crash was reported at 4:24 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest 14th Street and 31st Avenue.

The video obtained by Local 10 News shows the moment of impact. A light-colored sedan starts to turn onto 14th Street and is T-boned in the intersection by another vehicle.

The velocity behind the crash sent both cars flying down the street. Fire, smoke and debris followed, leaving people standing outside the food mart directly across the street stunned.

Sky 10 flew over the scene where cameras captured the mangled silver sedan crushed on its passenger side.

The store manager, identified only as Melvin, immediately ran into the store and grabbed a fire extinguisher.

“We heard ‘boom.’ And we are thinking the transformer blew, but that was the accident,” he said.

Melvin tried to free one of the drivers, who was inside the burning car.

“I checked on him and he’s barely moving and I’m like, ‘Are you OK?’ And he got out a slight ‘yes,’ and I said, ‘OK, try not to move. I’m going to get you help.’ So at that moment, I’m standing in the street trying to wave down cars so they don’t hit him because he has no lights in the back.”

According to authorities, one Lauderhill police officer used his baton to shatter a car window to help Lauderhill Fire Rescue personnel extract one of the victims from the car.

Lauderhill Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Levy confirmed that four people were transported to Broward Health Medical Center – one in cardiac arrest and three others as trauma alerts. Authorities said Walker died from his injuries at the hospital.

Lauderhill police shut down 31st Avenue and some of the side streets during the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Anyone with further information is asked to call the Lauderhill Police Department at 954-497-4700 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
