Local officials outraged over Cuban government delegation visiting MIA

MIAMI – A delegation from the Cuban government toured TSA facilities at Miami International Airport on Monday.

South Florida officials — including Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, all county commissioners and MIA’s director — all said they were given no advanced notice of the visit, which came on Cuban Independence Day.

According to officials, the delegation spent about five hours at the airport, viewing different areas including a security checkpoint and baggage screening area.

County commissioners, collectively, said they felt the visit was completely inappropriate.

“The fact that they would have a delegation from Cuba come to this airport is really shocking,” said Levine Cava. “This was a visit to learn about security methods, so this is not a cultural exchange, right? So it’s very inappropriate.”

Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Carlos Gimenez also spoke out against the visit.
