Video shows $1.8M Hermès handbag heist on South Beach

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Prosecutors have released surveillance video from what police said was a heist at a high-end store at a five-star Miami Beach hotel in March.

They said the perps stuffed nearly $2 million worth of Hermès handbags into garbage cans and took off.

It happened at around 2:45 a.m. on March 19 at Wrist Aficionado, located at The Setai hotel at 2001 Collins Ave. on South Beach, authorities said.

Eduardo Garcia, 45, and an accomplice are accused of breaking in, swiping the bags and leaving in separate vehicles.

Police quickly tracked down Garcia by the license plate on his orange Hyundai Santa Fe. That vehicle was also linked to a jewelry store heist in Hillsborough County that happened 10 days earlier, with the same modus operandi — garbage bins and all.

When they tracked down the vehicle to Garcia’s home in the Olympia Heights area of southwest Miami-Dade, police said he confessed to the crime and was arrested and charged with first-degree grand theft.

Police said the investigation remained open as of Monday.
