A South Florida family unfortunately familiar with tragedy is dealing with history repeating itself.
They are grieving 24-year-old Damarco Harris, who was killed last week, and his mother was murdered 21 years ago in Miami Gardens.
Police are still searching for answers in both cases.
According to police, Harris was shot multiple times while working as a rideshare driver in Miami’s Midtown neighborhood early Thursday morning.
His aunt, Nakai Kelly, said it appears the murder was random, as the shooter or shooters then stole his car.
“He was taken away too soon,” said Kelly. “Definitely did not expect this, especially after what happened to his mom.”
Kelly helped raise Harris after his mother was killed in 2003. Carmen Harris was stabbed to death inside her home in Miami Gardens on May 26, 2003.
On that night, it was Harris’ mother who called 911 and said someone was breaking into her house and that she had been stabbed multiple times.
That might have been her last conversation.
The family now mourns a mother and son killed 21 years apart, both only 24 years old and both pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Carmen Harris’ case is ice cold while the search for her son’s killer has just begun.
This grieving family is now asking for answers in both cases.
According to the Miami Gardens Police Department, Carmen Harris’s 2003 murder was in what was then unincorporated Miami-Dade County and is now the city of Miami Gardens.
They have also set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs, and that page can be found by clicking here.
