BAY HARBOR ISLANDS, Fla. – A man was arrested Sunday after he fled the scene after striking a pedestrian with his vehicle in Bay Harbor Islands, authorities said.
The crash was reported shortly after 4:30 p.m. in the area of 96th Street and East Broadview Drive.

According to the suspect’s arrest report, a driver flagged down a Bay Harbor Islands police officer to report an “erratic driver in a burgundy Buick sedan” that was heading east toward Bal Harbour.
Police said the officer was searching the area for the vehicle when he spotted a male lying face up on the street.
According to the report, the suspect’s vehicle was found a short time later in the area of 96th Street and Harding Avenue.
A witness identified the driver, Samuel Elliot Malave, 54, of Winter Haven, as the person who struck the pedestrian.
Malave was then arrested on charges of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and habitual driving with a suspended license.
As of Monday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,500 bond for the driving with a suspended license charge.
His bond had yet to be set for the second charge.
The victim’s identity has not been released.
