March of Dimes holds March for Babies in Broward, plans May event in Miami-Dade

Community fundraiser aims to prevent birth defects and premature births

DAVIE, Fla. ā€“ March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization that aims to prevent birth defects and premature births, held the annual Broward March for Babies on Saturday at Nova Southeastern University.

The list of co-chairs included Joe DiMaggio Childrenā€™s Hospital and Memorial Hospital West. The list of event sponsors at the local and national levels included Publix Supermarkets, Gerber, HCA Healthcare, and Nicklaus Childrenā€™s Hospital.

As of Saturday evening, the Doral-based nonprofit organization had raised over $12 million nationwide. The march in Broward had raised nearly $159,000 and the Memorial Healthcare team had raised over $9,600.

Lisa Thompson had the top team in Florida with about $14,230, while in Texas, Rosemary Schatzman, of Houston, had the top team nationwide with nearly $217,000.

Miami-Dade Countyā€™s March For Babies: A Mother of A Movement event is on May 18 at the Kendall Indian Hammocks Park, 11395 SW 79 St. The goal is $155,000.
