MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – An arrest has been made in connection with a stabbing and shooting near a truck yard in Medley that police say left two men hospitalized last month.
Jail records show Rafael Antonio Guevara, 22, of Miami, is facing one count each of attempted second-degree murder with a deadly weapon and unlawful discharge of a firearm in a public place or residential property.
Medley police said they responded to a stabbing and shooting call around 1:30 p.m. on April 16 near the intersection of 91st Street and 87th Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers said they found Yoan Pino Cruz bleeding from a gunshot wound to his face while lying on the ground near his work truck, which they identified as a white dump truck.
As first responders were attending to the shooting victim, police said they found Guevara, with multiple stab wounds to the abdomen, near a vehicle in the parking lot of the truck yard.
Medley police confirmed Pino Cruz was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital and Guevara was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center to have open heart surgery. Authorities confirmed both men survived the incident.
Detectives released surveillance video that showed Pino Cruz arriving at the area in a dump truck and Guevara arriving shortly after in an SUV, which he parked in the middle of the truck yard.
Moments later, police said video showed Pino Cruz exiting his vehicle and going to close the gate behind him when he got into a “violent altercation” with Guevara.
Once the altercation ended, police said Pino Cruz entered his work truck and began to drive away at the same time Guevara realized that he had been stabbed multiple times.
Additional surveillance video showed Guevara walking to his vehicle and grabbing a pistol, according to his arrest report.
Guevara was then seen running back to the gate, pausing, and then “taking a shooting stance” with a gun in his hand, the report stated.
Authorities said he was believed to have fired two shots at Pino Cruz’s dump truck as he was leaving the area.
Guevara’s arrest report states that he suffered a stab wound on his left forearm along with some lacerations.
Detectives wrote in the report that they “established probable cause to determine that the defendant (Guevara) intentionally committed an overt act that could have resulted in the death of the victim.”
Police said they are still seeking information regarding the relationship between both men and their possible connection to the truck yard.
Why the initial altercation between the two men occurred remains unclear.
As of Friday afternoon, Guevara was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
