OFF RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. – A veteran diver got up close and personal with a Great White Shark off the shores of South Florida.
Jim Fyfe was diving the Amaryllis, an artificial reef off Riviera Beach, when he saw something big in the distance on Thursday.
Fyfe swam over to take a closer look, and realized right away it was a Great White Shark.
Fyfe said the shark, which he estimated to be about 800 pounds, basically ignored him and kept swimming south.
Fyfe has been diving all his life and said this is the first time he has ever seen a Great White Shark off Palm Beach County.
This shark does not appear on Ocearch’s tracking page.
Ocearch is a shark-tagging outfit, which tracks Great Whites.
The Amaryllis was a Canadian cargo ship which ran aground during Hurricane Betsy off the coast of Florida in 1965.
The 441-foot-long vessel was later sunk to be used as an artificial reef.
