Teen describes how he was victim of ‘callous’ hit-and-run driver in Broward

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A 14-year-old boy described how a woman struck him, and got out of her dark gray Volvo sports utility vehicle to pick up her broken mirror — only to drive away leaving him behind alone and injured.

Kyle Rodriguez and his father Eddie Rodriguez said they want that hit-and-run driver arrested and charged for her crimes.

“My mental shape, I am shaken because I had never been hit by a car,” Kyle said near his damaged bicycle.

The hit-and-run crash was Monday at Northwest 56 Drive and Coral Ridge Drive.

“As I’m going, a car comes zipping around the turn, hits me,” Kyle said. “It was like a T-bone ... So I sat on the ground, the lady gets out and grabs her piece of her broken mirror, picks it up, gets back in her car ... I didn’t say a single word to her; she didn’t say a single word to me.”

Kyle said he saw her make a U-Turn and pull into the parking at a nearby McDonald’s. That she didn’t stop to ask his son if he was OK, really enraged Rodriguez. Kyle’s leg was injured.

“It’s callous to pick up your mirror and to get back in the car, make a U-Turn, park, and wait to see what happens, and see if the police come, and then take off,” Rodriguez said. “It just makes you question humanity.”

Kyle had a message for the woman: “Imagine if I was your kid, and someone hit me and drove off. Like, it’s kind of messed up. At least you could have said, ‘Sorry!’”

Rodriguez said the Volvo likely has damage on the passenger side door and the mirror.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
