FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – A 48-year-old man was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Sunday, accused of killing a woman in Florida City, authorities confirmed.
Sources close to the investigation told Local 10 News that the killing was allegedly over a failed romance.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, homicide detectives responded around 11 p.m. Saturday to Florida City Hall, at 404 West Palm Drive, to assist Florida City police officers with an investigation.
Sources told Local 10 that Alexander Roque used a Taurus Model 82 revolver to shoot his girlfriend, Yessenia Rodriguez Marquez, 44, in the head while the two were in a white 2024 Hyundai Tucson.
According to his arrest report, Roque then called the victim’s estranged husband and then used WhatsApp to contact him again in a video call.
Sources told Local 10 that Roque showed the husband her body in the front passenger seat.
Police confirmed that the “witness” screen-recorded the video call and provided it to investigators.
According to the report, Roque then called a cousin who told him to surrender to police.
Police said Roque sent his cousin a photo of the victim’s lifeless body via WhatsApp and the cousin called 911 to report what happened.
Local 10 News spoke with Roque’s neighbors who said they would usually see him in passing because he worked as an Uber driver.
Virginia Diaz, who lives nearby, said Roque knocked on her door to inform her would play loud music on the day of the incident. She found this unusual. However, she claimed that it was his blackout windows, double locks and storm shutters covering his lower floor window that caught the attention of residents.
“It is sad to know that you can live next to a person like that,” said Diaz.
Roque was allegedly covered in blood when he arrived at City Hall and pointed to the murder victim in the SUV. Records show Roque was facing one count of second-degree murder with a weapon.
According to his arrest report, Roque invoked his right to remain silent and did not provide a statement to homicide investigators.
Local 10 News reporter Roy Ramos also spoke with the ex-husband of the victim over the phone who said that he and his children are devastated over the incident.
As of Monday, Roque is being held without bond at TGK.
