West Miami-Dade grass fire burns 235 acres

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A fire in west Miami-Dade County has now burned 235 acres and was 85% contained as of Tuesday afternoon, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials confirmed.

MDFR and the Florida Forest Service are working to fully extinguish the grass fire near Southwest 137th Avenue and Eighth Street.

MDFR officials confirmed that the fire is not threatening any nearby properties or structures.

Firefighters have been battling the large blaze since Sunday afternoon.

Air Rescue was also deployed to drop water from the air to contain the fire.

On Tuesday, one MDFR unit was resuming operations to assist the Florida Forest Service.

“Smoky conditions may continue in the area,” MDFR said in a news release. “If those in the area suffer from respiratory conditions, continue to remain indoors, if possible. Keep your windows and doors closed and run your air conditioner by recirculating the air inside your home until conditions improve. If you have asthma or another lung disease, make sure you follow your healthcare provider’s directions.”
