Video shows Ohio man likely had firearm training before killing 2, injuring 1 in Miami

MIAMI – Surveillance video released on Tuesday shows it’s likely that a gunman who killed two men and injured a witness in Miami had firearm training, police said.

Miami detectives identified him as Jason Craig Dyer-Mitchell. Records show the 23-year-old man from Ohio had an arrest record in Miami Beach after an attack in South Beach.

Dyer-Mitchell has been at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center since early Sunday morning. Detectives accused him of fatally shooting Shamun Shaukat and Shahbaz Hussain, and injuring Elijah Shorter at about 12:30 a.m., on Saturday in Liberty City

Shaukat and Hussain were working and getting ready to close the Chevron gas station, at 1701 NW 54 St., when Shaukat suspected Dyer-Mitchell was shoplifting and confronted him.

According to the police report, a hoodie helped detectives to identify Dyer-Mitchell. It was black and had “POWER” in white font, and it was from the Powerhouse Gym Miami where he was a member.

Police officers arrested Dyer-Mitchell about five hours after the murders. He was at a nearby sixth-floor apartment in the Liberty Village condo building across the street from the gas station, according to police.

In the apartment, police officers found a fanny pack with a 9 mm magazine and an IWI Masada 9mm pistol, according to the arrest report. Dyer-Mitchell refused to talk to detectives.

Court records show Dyer-Mitchell had been on probation in Miami-Dade County until Sept. 11 after a felony case before Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez.

Miami Beach police officers arrested Dyer-Mitchell on Jan. 3, 2022, in South Beach after accusing him of placing a nail between his knuckles and punching a man with it in the face outside of a hostel.

Records show witnesses told Miami Beach police officers that Dyer-Mitchell was drinking straight out of a bottle of vodka and police officers found ecstasy and marijuana in his backpack.

Court records show Miami-Dade prosecutors dropped the marijuana possession charges.

The court withheld adjudication on the felony charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and possession of a controlled substance, and on the alcohol-related municipal ordinance, records show.

Court records show Dyer-Mitchell was sentenced to a 2-year probation. Corrections released him to the Camillus House for services. His probation was from June 22, 2022, to Sept. 11.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
