MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearby roadways were shut down Sunday afternoon after a grass fire erupted in west Miami-Dade County.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials, crews responded to the fire in the area of Southwest 137th Avenue and Eighth Street around 2:14 p.m.
“To protect nearby structures, the fire was upgraded to a Second Alarm to have additional units assist in the firefighting efforts,” a spokesperson for the fire department told Local 10 in an email. “We currently have over 18 units on scene supporting Florida Forest Service to extinguish the fire.”
The spokesperson said fire units were patrolling the area and putting out spot fires while Air Rescue was deploying water drops to contain the fire.
According to MDFR, sections of the fire on the south side of the affected area have been extinguished.
“Due to smoke and limited visibility, roads near the area have been closed,” the spokesperson said. “We also advise due to the smoky conditions, to please avoid the area. If you are in the area and have respiratory issues, remain indoors. Keep your windows and doors closed and have your air conditioning unit recirculate air inside your home.”
