MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A Pinecrest police officer was wounded in a shooting at a gun range near the Homestead Air Reserve Base in south Miami-Dade Wednesday afternoon.
It happened at the Homestead Training Center, located at 11700 SW 304th St., just before 2:30 p.m., according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue dispatch records.
Pinecrest police said the officer was shot “during a pre-schedule(d) training exercise” and was initially taken to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital before being transferred by helicopter to Jackson South Medical Center.
Police said another officer shot her in the forearm in what appears to have been an accident. They said she was stable as of Wednesday afternoon.
“She’s in great condition. She’s going to be just fine. That’s the best news that we could have,” Pinecrest Police Department Chief Jason Cohen said. “She’s in good spirits. She’s surrounded by her family. And you know we’re dealing with it as a family, as one Pinecrest.”
The officer was later discharged from the hospital and returned home to recover with her family.

Officials said the injured officer has served the police department for four years. The officer who shot at her has been with the department for even longer.
“Everybody is a little shaken up today. But the good news is she is going to be just fine,” Cohen said. “I am extremely relieved. You get that call no chief wants to hear, that one of your officers was shot. Regardless of how it happened, you never want to hear that, but I knew from pretty early on that it wasn’t a very serious wound and that she was going to be OK, so that was a big relief.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
