‘I thought I was dead:’ Boy, 10, recounts being shot in crossfire in Pompano drive-by

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A brave 10-year-old boy spoke to Local 10 News Monday after being shot while he was in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting in Pompano Beach last month.

The shooting occurred around 6:35 p.m. on March 21, at Hunters Manors Park, near the 300 block of Northwest 18th Avenue.

“How are you feeling, Noah?” asked Local 10 News reporter Alex Finnie.

“I’m OK. I’m grateful right now,” said Noah West.

“Do you remember what was going through your mind when you got shot?” asked Finnie.

“I thought I was dead, but I looked at myself and said, ‘I’m still alive!”' Noah replied.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office released surveillance video Monday of the shooting that left the boy injured.

“Surveillance video of the crime shows the victim dribbling a basketball while crossing the street. As the child bounces the ball, another subject wearing a green hoodie and long black pants enters the frame riding a scooter. A few seconds later, a gray sedan drives by, and shots are fired,” BSO spokeswoman Gerdy St. Louis said in a news release. “In the video, you see the scooter rider drop to the ground, as the 10-year-old boy takes off running. The vehicle turns north and flees the scene.”

Noah told Local 10 News he was coming home from a friend’s house when the shooting occurred.

After spending over two weeks in the hospital, Noah said the shooting has since altered his perception of the area, and he no longer feels safe there.

“If I never get shot, I’d probably be at this park right now, but I don’t want to be over here because there’s too much stuff going on,” he said.

No other injuries were reported and a motive for the shooting has not yet been released.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting or the identity or whereabouts of the shooter and/or vehicle to contact BSO Violent Crimes Det. Brittany Armstrong at 954-321-4888 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch app.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), online at browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS (8477) from any cellphone in the United States.
