MIAMI – At the peak of Monday’s solar eclipse, something very cute was happening at Zoo Miami.
A pair of 4-month-old baby sloth bears named Anika and Sithara made their first habitat appearance.
The curious little cubs roamed and played, seemingly unaware of the celestial event unfolding in the sky above that captivated families nearby.
“Sloth bears are considered a vulnerable species that is threatened by poaching and habitat destruction,” Zoo Miami states on its website, “They are solitary and found in moist and dry forests of the Indian subcontinent where they feed primarily on fruit and insects – especially termites. Their long shaggy coat does not have an undercoat, so it helps keep them cool in their native warm climate while protecting them from biting insects.”
The beloved character Baloo from “The Jungle Book” is also a sloth bear.
