NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – New details were released Friday after a 4-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with his father’s handgun in North Miami Beach on Wednesday.
Local 10 News has learned that the child’s father, who police identified as Peter Rodler Tidot, 29, is a police officer in the city of Columbia, South Carolina.
The gun that the child got his hands on was Tidot’s official “duty weapon,” according to authorities.
The Columbia Police Department released a statement to Local 10 News Friday, which you can read below:
“A Columbia Police Department (CPD) officer has been placed on investigatory suspension after being arrested by the North Miami Beach Police Department this week.
CPD was notified by the arresting agency of charges stemming from allegations of negligence after an incident involving his 4-year-old son and an improperly secured and loaded duty weapon assigned to Peter Tidot.
Per protocol, Tidot who has been with CPD since April 2023 will remain on investigatory suspension until the disposition of criminal charges in Florida and administrative investigation by CPD’s Internal Affairs Unit under the Office of Professional Standards.
Columbia Police Chief W.H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook says, “We are praying for the speedy recovery of the child and everyone impacted by the incredibly unfortunate incident. Let this serve as a reminder about the importance of gun safety and proper gun storage.”
CPD will continue to work with the North Miami Beach Police Department regarding the case.”
Authorities said North Miami Beach police officers responded to a shooting incident near the 17000 block of Northeast Second Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers encountered Tidot outside his parent’s residence, who informed them that his four-year-old son had accidentally shot himself.
An arrest report states police found the child in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to his head, and a gun was found on the floor nearby.
Local 10 News spoke with Ronel Tidot, Peter Tidot’s brother, who said the child, who he identified only as “Junior,” is “doing good” expected to survive and that he was going to Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital to check on his nephew.
Ronel Tidot also claimed his brother had a good relationship with his nephew.
Police said Peter Tidot was taken to the North Miami Beach police station for questioning, where he waived his Miranda rights and elected to speak with detectives.
According to Peter Tidot’s statement, he and the victim arrived at his parent’s residence earlier that day, where he brought a black Sig Sauer .45 caliber handgun and placed it in his waistband with a round in the chamber.
The rest of his confession was redacted in the report, however, Tidot admitted to contacting the police and waiting for officers to arrive outside the residence, police confirmed.
After further investigation, police said Peter Tidot left the loaded gun unsecured and within reach of his son, who grabbed it and accidentally shot himself on the right side of the head.
Detectives called Peter Tidot’s actions “culpable negligence,” after they said he failed to protect his son which resulted in great bodily harm.
Jail records show Peter Tidot is facing one count each of child neglect with great bodily harm and culpable negligence pertaining to leaving a firearm within easy access of a minor.
He was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he posted a bond of $3,000 Thursday night.
Peter appeared in bond court on Thursday afternoon, where a judge initially ordered him to stay away from the victim. However, the State Attorney’s Office modified the order to allow supervised contact only. Additionally, he was prohibited from possessing any firearm, weapon or illegal drug.
Officials told Local 10 News affiliate ABC Columbia that Tidot has served with the CPD since April of 2023.
