PLANTATION, Fla. – A South Florida man is behind bars, accused of stabbing his wife and 2-year-old to death inside their Plantation home.
Loved ones have been left wondering why as a makeshift memorial now sits in front of the victims’ home.
Jean Carlos Aponte was formally arrested and charged over the weekend with two counts of first-degree murder.
He faced a bond court judge on Sunday, wearing a suicide vest.
Aponte’s arrest report paints a gruesome picture.
His wife, 38-year-old Sara Ashley Gama, was found by her own father last Tuesday on the kitchen floor of their home, covered in blood with 28 stab wounds, mostly to her face and neck area.
The report goes on to state that the couple’s 2-year-old son Ethan was located face down in a pool with four stab wounds to the front of his neck. His cause of death was sharp force injury and drowning.
The couple’s baby, 4-month old Evan, was found crying in the house, but was unharmed.
Aponte was also at the home. Police said he was unconscious in a master bedroom.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition for an apparent self-induced drug overdose.
Last week, officers spent days at the crime scene, even recovering a phone in the water, possibly containing critical information about the last messages between the couple.
Authorities have yet to release any motive in the killings.
Aponte was taken to a jail in Fort Lauderdale after he was released from the hospital.
His 4-month-old son is now in the care of his maternal grandparents.
