North Miami student appears in court after riding ATV during Miami-Dade-Broward police chase

MIAMI – A North Miami High School student who tried to get away from police officers, deputies, and troopers in an all-terrain vehicle appeared in adult court on Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale.

The 18-year-old senior stood before Broward County Circuit Judge Christopher Brown. Assistant State Attorney Eric M. Linder said Anthony Angel Perez didn’t surrender as the defense alleged.

“His ATV ran out of gas,” Linder said.

Perez was wearing a black ski mask in Opa-locka when he sped away from police officers on Monday and fled northbound on Interstate 95, and later against traffic southbound on I-95, according to police.

The chase from Miami-Dade to Broward County lasted over an hour. A Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter followed with deputies.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrested Perez near Sunrise Boulevard and Northwest 31 Avenue and took him to the Broward County main jail.

Perez is facing charges of reckless driving, fleeing or eluding at high speed or wanton disregard for safety, and aggravated fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer.

Brown set Perez’s bond at $5,500 and he was released on Tuesday afternoon. According to BSO records, Perez remained at the main jail on Tuesday afternoon.

Broward County Circuit Judge Edward H. Merrigan Jr. was set to preside over the case.
