DAVIE, Fla. – A man was arrested after an incident in a Davie parking lot turned dangerous.
According to police, a crash between two vehicles inside the Griffin Plaza, located in the 8200 block of Griffin Road, at around 3 p.m. Tuesday led to one of the drivers suddenly pulling out a hatchet and going after the other.
That’s when the owner of the Fat Stork restaurant stepped in.
That man didn’t want to reveal his identity, but people who saw what happened called him a hero.
“I said, ‘Oh my God, now he is going to kill me,’” the man said.
He ran outside after hearing a car crash into the back of another outside of his restaurant, and then he said he saw a woman running toward him.
“When I see this lady running toward the store saying, ‘He’s going to kill me, he’s going to kill me,’” the restaurant owner said. “And they run into my store and I push them back.”
Witnesses also saw everything happen.
“I saw this guy crash into this car, and he gets out of the car and starts beating her up,” said witness Dillon Numan.
The man followed the woman while holding a hatchet in his hand, which he then turned on the restaurant owner.
“He went to my head, and I stepped back, so he hit my hand,” he said.
Others nearby stepped in to help, according to witnesses.
“He got distracted because one of the guys pulled a taser, so I said, ‘Look he has a gun,’ so he got distracted,” said the restaurant owner.
The owner said he then managed to hit the guy and subdue him.
The woman and the men who helped her only suffered minor injuries thanks to their quick thinking.
“He looked like he wanted to kill her,” said Numan.
Added the restaurant owner: “She said, ‘Thank you for saving my life,’ because he was going to kill her.”
Davie police called the incident a domestic dispute. They have not released the identity of the man who was arrested.
