1 dead, 1 arrested after crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Florida City

FHP: Fatal crash shut down both lanes of highway for about 5 hours

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – A man has been arrested following a deadly hit-and-run crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Florida City, authorities confirmed Tuesday morning.

According to Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Damian Avila, the crash occurred just after 11:30 p.m. Monday near Southwest 328th Street.

Cellphone video sent to Local 10 by a viewer shows one vehicle on the highway that rolled over onto its roof.

Avila said a white Honda Accord and a black Ford Expedition were heading south on the Turnpike when, for unknown reasons, the Honda crashed into the rear of the SUV.

“After impact, the Ford Expedition collided with the metal guardrail on the right, then crossed all southbound lanes,” Avila said in an email to Local 10 News. “The Ford Expedition collided with the concrete barrier wall onto the northbound lanes. The driver of the Ford Expedition was not wearing a seatbelt.”

Avila said the driver of the Expedition was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said the driver of the Honda fled the scene on foot but was detained shortly after.

According to Avila, all northbound and southbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed for about five hours as detectives investigated the circumstances leading up to the crash.

All lanes have since reopened.

The identities of the suspect and victim have not yet been released.
