Suspect identified following ATV chase that spanned Miami-Dade, Broward

MIAMI – A police chase involving an ATV began in Miami-Dade County Monday morning and ended in Broward around 12:20 p.m.

The ATV rider, identified as 18-year-old Anthony Angel Perez, finally stopped on the side of the northbound lanes of 31st Avenue, just south of Oakland Park Boulevard in Lauderdale Lakes, before being taken into custody.

Sky 10 was above the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and Eighth Street in the city of Miami around 11:40 a.m. as one police officer was following closely behind the ATV.

Perez, who was wearing a ski mask, was then seen jumping onto the northbound express lanes of Interstate 95 as more police officers joined the chase.

Perez appeared to be slowing down at some points, but then continued to speed up, evading the officers.

He then headed into Broward County, getting off the highway at Stirling Road in Hollywood. He eventually made a U-Turn to head east on Stirling Road before getting back on the northbound lanes of I-95.

He then got onto the southbound lanes of the highway, heading in the opposite direction of traffic.

Perez eventually turned around, going south in the southbound lanes before getting off at Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, heading west.

“(There were) just so many cops pulled in and helicopters came out of nowhere,” witness Shakari Nelson said. “I was just shocked.”

It’s unclear why Perez initially fled from officers.

A Local 10 News crew saw the suspect being taken into the Broward County jail.

He is facing a number of charges, including fleeing and eluding law enforcement and reckless driving.

Officers from the City of Miami and Miami-Dade police departments were involved in the chase, as well as troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol and the Broward Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit.
