Miami International Airport deals with large crowds after weather-related delays

MIAMI – There were storms on Friday night and Saturday morning in Miami-Dade County. There was also wintry weather on Sunday in New England and California.

Weather-related flight cancellations and delays had travelers resting on the floor and waiting in long lines at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints at Miami International Airport.

According to Greg Chin, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, 90 flights were canceled on Sunday at MIA — including 63 arrivals. Chin also reported that 204 flights were delayed on Sunday, including 135 departures.

There was a similar situation at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

It was a busy weekend in South Florida. The Ultra Music Festival, which organizers estimated attracted over 55,000 tourists to Miami-Dade, ended on Sunday night.

Spring breakers were also set to leave Miami and Miami Beach, and the Miami Open was ongoing until March 31 at the Hard Rock Stadium property in Miami Gardens.

Chin asked travelers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their domestic flights, and at least four hours before their international flights.
