Man pulls knife at Pinecrest sports bar over joke about ‘picking up’ 14-year-old, cops say

PINECREST, Fla. – A man took serious offense to an off-color joke made while in line for the men’s room at a Pinecrest sports bar, so much so, that he pulled out a knife, authorities said, landing the 56-year-old in jail.

Pinecrest police said Sergio Luis Roman Jr. threatened the friend of the man who made the comment and the establishment’s bartender. Neither of those men actually made the comment in question, police said.

Police took Roman, of southwest Miami-Dade, into custody Thursday, three days after the incident, on two felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to an arrest report, it happened just after 2 a.m. Monday at Corbett’s Sports Bar & Grill at 12721 S. Dixie Highway.

Police said the victim was waiting in line with two friends and were “laughing and joking” as they talked about “picking up girls.”

One of the victim’s friends, police said, then jokingly asked, “What about a 14-year-old?”

Roman, apparently, was able to hear the comment while he was in the bathroom and didn’t like it, according to police.

The arrest report states he came out of the bathroom and asked, “What are you talking about a 14-year-old? You think this is a joke? I’m going to f--- you guys up!”

He then pulled a knife and the victim “began pointing at his friend,” who was the one who actually made the remark, police said.

The report states the victim tried getting out of Roman’s way, but Roman cornered him and held the knife up to his face. The victim, police said, put his hands up out of fear.

Police said the bartender then came over and told Roman to drop the knife.

Instead, according to the report, Roman “aggressively” turned towards him, with the knife still in his hand, and asked, “What’s up n----?”

All of this happened in the span of about 30 seconds, police said.

The bartender then came over, intervened and restrained Roman and the bar owner disarmed him, the report states.

Based on the report, it doesn’t appear that Roman ever aimed the knife at the man responsible for the upsetting remark.

Police said Roman, who is now trespassed from Corbett’s, voluntarily turned himself in at Pinecrest police headquarters on Wednesday.

As of Friday, he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond.
