Man, 76, accused of fatally shooting wife inside Tamarac home

TAMARAC, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office identified a suspect Friday who they say shot his wife to death inside a home in Tamarac last week.

Deputies said Rollan Powell, 76, of Tamarac, was taken into custody Thursday by BSO’s V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) Unit on a warrant for the murder of his wife, Janice Herbert, 53.

The shooting was reported at 11:43 p.m. March 15 in the 4500 block of Northwest 45th Court.

According to BSO spokesman Carey Codd, deputies arrived at the scene to find that Herbert had been shot inside of the home where she was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to BSO detectives, their investigation revealed that Powell appeared to stage a burglary to cover up the homicide and provided inconsistent statements to detectives regarding the incident.

Many in the quiet neighborhood were left wondering what exactly unfolded.

“Usually it’s very quiet and it’s quite safe,” neighbor Linda Brann told Local 10 News last week.

BSO said following his arrest, Powell was taken to the Broward Main Jail.

Jail records show he is facing one count of first-degree murder with a firearm.

Powell appeared in bond court Friday morning where a judge found probable cause on his murder charge and held him without bond.
