KEY WEST, Fla. – Deputies arrested an 18-year-old Tavernier man on a felony charge Monday after they said he made a threat that prompted a lockdown at Key West High School last Tuesday.

According to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Isaac Rodney Holmes made the threat through a Snapchat video.

The report states that in the video, Holmes tagged a person and wrote “w8 for yu gon see cheeto.”

“Cheeto,” deputies said, was the nickname of Garrett Hughes, who was shot and killed in Key West in February 2023. A local businessman is accused of murdering the 21-year-old.

In the video, Holmes had an “unknown object in his pants” that appeared to be a gun “due to the position, coloring and shape of the object,” deputies said.

Students at KWHS saw the threatening video and the school, located at 2100 Flagler Ave., went into lockdown, authorities said.

“A sports team from Coral Shores (High School) was arriving at the Key West High School and the administration at the school and (deputies) feared that Holmes would be on the bus,” the investigating deputy wrote in the report.

The report states that Holmes told deputies that he had a BB gun in his pants in the video, “which he threw away because he was scared that the Key West students would call the police and (screenshot) the (Snapchat) incident.”

It states that a deputy “repeatedly asked Holmes where the BB gun was and to be (forthcoming) with him, to which he said he threw it away out of county.”

Deputies said Holmes has been involved in “several altercations” at KWHS athletic events and is known to school administrators countywide.

Holmes is facing a charge of sending a written threat to kill, do bodily injury, or conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism.

According to MCSO jail records, he was being held on a $500,000 bond.
