Body camera footage of fatal Davie police shooting released

Police ID suspect, officers who fired

DAVIE, Fla. – Authorities released body-worn camera footage Monday of a deadly police shooting that happened three days prior.

According to Davie police, the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Friday at a home in the 14500 block of Southwest 24th Street.

Authorities had been on the scene for a medical call when they said an unknown man, later identified as Steven Amann, confronted officers as they were tending to a patient.

Officers spoke with Amann and tried to determine why he was at the home, police said, but he was mostly nonverbal and did not answer any questions.

Police said he then reached behind his back, backed up towards an “area of concealment,” then “quickly” took a shooting stance and pointed an object at officers, leading them to shoot Amann.

Authorities haven’t yet said whether that object was a gun.

Fire rescue personnel at the scene tended to Amann and took him to an area hospital where he later died, police said.

Davie police identified the officers who opened fire as Sergeant Steve Lambert, Officer Matthew Correa, and Officer Jarrett Wheeler.

All three, police said, remain on standard administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.
