WEST MIAMI, Fla. – An elementary school in west Miami was temporarily evacuated Friday morning after authorities said they received reports of a gas leak.
The incident led to an evacuation of students and staff members at Sylvania Heights Elementary, located at 5901 SW 16th St.
Sky 10 flew over the scene around 12:15 p.m. where Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews were canvassing the area and students were being directed to a nearby field.
Authorities confirmed a hazmat unit has responded to the school.
Miami-Dade police said children and staff members were eventually allowed to return and a gas company was at the scene addressing the leak.
It remains unclear as to what caused the leak.
No other details were immediately released.
