Miami Gardens police sergeant arrested on DUI, reckless driving charges

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A Miami Gardens police sergeant was arrested early Thursday morning by her own police department after being pulled over in her vehicle, authorities confirmed.

According to her arrest report, Sgt. Andrea Smith, 38, was pulled over around 1:50 a.m. in the area of Northwest Second Avenue and 202nd Terrace.

Police said an officer was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Northwest Second Avenue and 191st Street when the officer spotted a white Mercedes-Benz speeding northbound.

According to the report, the car then slowly rolled through a red light before speeding up again, traveling at a high rate of speed while driving through a second red light.

Police said Smith was then pulled over.

The officer noted in the arrest report that Smith had been driving erratically, so the officer had their gun drawn as he or she approached the vehicle.

According to the report, the officer saw that Smith’s eyes were bloodshot and watery and smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. She was also slurring her speech, the officer wrote in the report.

Police said the officer requested their supervisor to respond to the scene and Miramar police were also asked to respond to administer a field sobriety test.

According to the report, Smith refused to submit to a field sobriety test or Breathalyzer test.

Smith was then arrested on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving.

“My officers are held to the highest standard both on and off duty. I can assure you that the actions of this individual is not the reflection of the agency. The sergeant will be relieved of duty and afforded due process accordingly,” Miami Gardens Police Chief Delma Noel-Pratt said.

As of Thursday morning, Smith was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in lieu of a $1,150 bond.
