911 calls released following Lauderdale-by-the-Sea stabbing incident

LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. – Authorities have released the calls for help to 911 after a stabbing in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

Police said a woman was injured in the incident that happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

A man turned himself into police the next morning.

Multiple people who heard her screams did not think twice about stepping in to help.

One 911 caller stated: “This girl was screaming in the car. This man was touching her, and then someone instructed her to call the police... we need an ambulance and he ran away. We got his license plate and he drove away really fast.”

Another 911 caller said: “I just heard screaming and my dad went over to check and the guy was holding the person’s throat who was bleeding out.”

That was the daughter of David Spaulding, a tourist who rushed in to help after hearing the woman’s screams.

“I reached in to stop the bleeding,” Spaulding told Local 10 News.

Spaulding and his daughter are visiting South Florida from Ohio.

The suspect, Damion Matthews, 47, later surrendered to police.

The woman who was rushed to the hospital is expected to survive, very likely thanks to those good Samaritans.
