CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A former student was arrested Tuesday for trespassing at a high school in Broward County, prompting quick action by police, authorities confirmed.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. just moments after students said they were heading to the school’s basketball courts for a fire drill at Coral Springs Charter School, located at 3205 N. University Dr.
Local 10 News obtained cellphone video that shows Coral Springs Charter School Principal Gary Springer escorting the teen out of the classroom with a police officer as the culprit was then seen making faces behind the principal’s back.
“Are you out of your freaking mind?” asked the former student as he was being walked out of class. “You ain’t going to see me for a while.”
“You must be crazy right now— enough!” Springer told the student.
Students say while they were in the classroom, the teen pretended to teach the class and continued to be disruptive.
“While we had a fire drill, he took advantage because we are not a school with a full perimeter, so he walked into the school, walked into a classroom and then he just did some stupid stuff,” said CSCS student Kevin Caines.
After trespassing onto a campus that is supposed to be secure, the incident has some parents expressing concern, as what was a harmless situation this time could turn to something more sinister the next.
“As a parent, you don’t want anything bad to happen to your kid,” said Morris Wilson, whose child attends CSCS.
Following the incident, Springer posted a message to Facebook informing parents and students of the school’s response:
“We are so proud of our students for alerting adults, and for the quick actions of our safety team when a former student was located on campus without authorization. The individual was arrested and removed from campus within three minutes of his arrival.”
“Everybody is working at it,” said Wilson. “Nobody wants some nonsense to happen.”
Local 10 News has reached out to Coral Springs police to find out what charges that teen will be facing.
Meanwhile, Springer says his staff is taking all the appropriate action to make sure students are safe.
