LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. – According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a late Sunday night stabbing in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea was the result of relationship issues, the suspect’s friend told deputies.

It happened just before 9:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of North Ocean Drive. Medics took the victim, a woman, to Broward Health North with serious injuries.

A newly-released arrest report states that the suspect, Damion Matthews, 47, of Pembroke Pines, told a friend earlier in the day that he was going to “kill” the woman, because she was “moving on from their relationship” because “she found a new partner.”

Deputies said Matthews stabbed the woman twice in the neck while she was seated in her Jeep. The report states Matthews left in his own SUV after bystanders intervened.

Matthews then called his friend and told him that “he hurt (redacted) badly and hopes that she lives,” BSO Detective Pedro Almodovar Fernandez wrote in the report.

The suspect then called BSO and told them he wished to turn himself in and did so at its Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale, deputies said.

During a police interview, Matthews said he and the woman were eating at Tacocraft Taqueria & Tequila Bar, went to their vehicles after the meal, then discussed the relationship ending, the report states.

He “declined to provide more information without an attorney present,” Almodovar Fernandez wrote.

Matthews, charged with attempted murder, remained held without bond in the BSO Main Jail as of Tuesday morning.
