FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Jason Fogelman leads a new neighborhood watch at Fort Lauderdale’s Coral Ridge Isles. He said has had an eye on a house for rent on Airbnb, and he and his 9-year-old son witnessed a murder there on Saturday.
Fogelman called police officers after the shooting at about 1 p.m. Surveillance videos show when the shooting victim, who authorities confirmed is 20 years old and from Pompano Beach, dropped to the ground when his friends tried to save him.
“These Airbnb have been bringing problems to our neighborhood for years,” Fogelman wrote in an e-mail.
A Ring camera video from across the street recorded a two-door sports car that appeared to be a Mustang passing by, the sound of five shots fired, and a witness screaming in terror.
The surveillance video also shows a group carrying the wounded victim to a sports utility vehicle. There was yelling and crying. The SUV and a BMW left as the sound of police sirens got closer.
The victim’s blood was still on the ground, near the front door of the house on Sunday. Witnesses’ videos and photos show police officers with long guns and police dogs searching on Saturday.
The shooting did not happen at the apartments at the Casa Del Sol apartment building as first reported, but in the neighboring home where residents said there was a rowdy party on Friday night.
“It just seems that the last couple of years has really gotten out of control,” Fogelman said, adding someone from the party threw a wine bottle.
There were city code violations on the Airbnb home’s door. Fogelman said Airbnb is not properly vetting who is renting out the homes and that needs to change.
“FLPD has three people detained on scene and we are working to determine if there are any further outstanding suspects involved,” Detective Ali Adamson wrote in a statement on Saturday.
The shooting victim arrived at Broward Health Imperial Point, a hospital north of the crime scene at 6401 N. Federal Highway, in Fort Lauderdale, according to Adamson.
“There was a helicopter overhead,” Fogelman said.
On Sunday, Adamson reported the man had been pronounced dead at the hospital and there was an ongoing investigation.
“Detectives do not believe any additional suspects are outstanding,” Adamson wrote.
Detectives asked anyone with information about the case to call FLPD at 954-828-5700 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
