Spring breakers’ party in South Beach was tamed and Ocean Drive was empty by 2 a.m.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Police officers report making about 100 arrests so far on Saturday this spring break for party-related crimes such as driving under the influence.

The spring breakers’ Friday night party in South Beach was tamed and Ocean Drive was empty by 2 a.m., Saturday. The city had a strong police presence, barricades, and new regulations limiting alcohol, loud music, outdoor seating, parking, and traffic.

On Friday, Michael Ansra, a Miami Beach resident appreciated the change after years of chaotic street parties and fights — some ending in shootings.

“Spring breakers have the right to enjoy but they don’t have the right to destroy,” Ansra said.

The city raised the parking fees. This annoyed Stephen Harmon, a tourist from South Carolina who said he much rather pay to ride horses than pay a $100 fee.

Chief Wayne Jones announced earlier this week that his strategy included deploying additional officers. Police cars lined up on the grass of Lummus Park facing the bars and restaurants of Ocean Drive.
