FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Miami man told deputies he was “trying to be funny” and “flirt” with another passenger at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport by saying he had a bomb in his bag, authorities said.

There was no bomb, but the remark bombed in the eyes of the law, earning him a felony charge, according to an arrest report made public on Wednesday.

Alan Borinsky, 70, who lives in the Spring Garden neighborhood, made the comment on Friday, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Two witnesses told deputies that while sitting at Gate G11 in Terminal 4, they heard Borinsky tell the other passenger something along the lines of, “If the bomb in my bag goes off prematurely, I apologize to your family in advance,” the report states.

They became alarmed and reported the threat to BSO, deputies said.

Borinsky, before explaining that he was trying to flirt, said he “knew what he said was wrong,” the report states.

Deputies arrested Borinsky and he was later released from jail on a $7,500 bond, according to court records.

A judge found probable cause to charge him with making a false bomb report, a second-degree felony, and he has pleaded not guilty in Broward County court.
