HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A Homestead police officer was facing a felony charge on Wednesday in Miami-Dade County court, records show.

Officer Diego Quiroga’s wife told police officers she was so afraid for her safety that she ran away from him to hide in the bathroom and armed herself with the shower’s curtain rod, according to the report.

The police officers who responded to the townhouse where they live in a gated community in Homestead reported she suffered a laceration to the face that required medical attention.

Quiroga’s colleagues reported he had scratches on his face and chest, and decided not to arrest him at his townhome, according to the arrest report.

After an investigation, one of Quiroga’s colleagues did decide to arrest him shortly before 3:45 p.m., on Feb. 29 at the Homestead Police Department headquarters.

Quiroga appeared in bond court on March 1 and a judge set his bond to $1,000 and ordered him to stay away from his wife.

On Tuesday, Quiroga’s arraignment hearing was set for 9 a.m., on March 28, according to court records. Quiroga is facing a charge of aggravated battery. The court had yet to assign the case to a judge on Wednesday.

Chief Alexander E. Rolle, Jr. released a statement on Wednesday saying Quiroga had been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the result of an investigation.

“If deemed necessary, we will take appropriate action. Incidents of this nature are taken very seriously by the Homestead Police Department,” Rolle said in the statement. “We want to assure the community that we are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability within our department.”
