Loved ones want justice for South Florida native Drexel Mack, who was killed in Missouri

Mack was court employee, former Florida corrections sergeant

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Drexel Mack was born and raised in south Miami-Dade County.

Mack’s ex-wife Monica Love Orange explained he wanted to continue following his passion for serving the community even after moving to Missouri, working as a circuit court civil process server.

“I know it can be dangerous,” she said. “Last year unfortunately he was shot at serving a notice.”

Last week, Mack was shot and killed, along with a responding officer, while trying to serve an eviction notice in Independence, just outside of Kansas City.

“It hurts, it hurts and it hurts so more,” said Love Orange.

Mack leaves behind his son, 19-year-old Drexel Mack Jr., who still lives in Miami-Dade.

Even after the move 12 years ago, the father and son kept a close relationship through all that time

“They were cool with each other, both gamers, Patriots fans,” said Love Orange. “If you see their pictures, you see they are identical to each other.”

She is now pained by all the moments murder has stolen from her son and his father.

“I have questions that will never have answers, because the person had the answers is not here anymore,” she said.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne McGhee is more than the Mack family attorney: He is also a family friend.

“The truth of the matter is there is no healing once you lose a family member to gun violence,” said McGhee. “This is truly a close-knit family. This is a man who loved his job, who was dedicated.”

Loved ones also had pointed words for the man police said is responsible for killing Mack.

“What we are seeing across the table there is an attack on law enforcement here,” said McGhee. “We will push for the maximum penalty as possible.”

Added Love Orange: “We want the max. We are looking at the impact it is having on Drexel Jr. and we would fail the child if we did not encourage, and be a voice that says, maximum sentence, because not only did he permanently harm the family of one but two, we do not feel like he could be rehabilitated to an extent to be re-acclimated and reintroduced to a community.”

Mack is a former Florida corrections officer, working at Dade Correctional Institution, according to Love Orange.

He worked for the Florida Department of Corrections from July of 2003 to October of 2009, according to FDOC.
