Bishop was hired at WPLG-TV 10 in Miami in 1970 and became the first female journalist to anchor the evening news in a major market.
For decades, Bishop was the face of South Florida news, anchoring alongside legends like Glenn Rinker and Dwight Lauderdale.
“Ann Bishop shattered the glass ceiling when she took a seat at what was until then an all-male anchor desk, and became the first woman to anchor the evening news in a major market,” said E.R. Bert Medina, the President & CEO of WPLG, Inc.
Sadly, she passed away from Colon cancer in 1997.
Journalists from across Florida traveled to Barry University in Miami Shores for her memorial service.
Barry University students are awarded a scholarship in Bishop’s name every year.
“We still hear from women in our industry who credit Ann for their own career success,” said Medina. “WPLG owes a great deal of our success to Ann. She laid the foundation and we work every day to honor her legacy.”
Hall of Fame inductees are chosen based on their distinguished professional career directly tied to Florida, devoting a minimum of 25 years to the industry.
The introductory class of honorees includes nine broadcasters from both radio and television.
