MIAMI – The Key Biscayne gymnastics coach accused of committing sex crimes against two of his students went before a judge again on Tuesday and, again, his pre-trial release hearing appeared likely to be postponed another day.
The judge overseeing the case scolded prosecutors for the delay. They have asked for more time to redact victim statements in the case before handing documents over to lawyers representing Oscar Olea, 38.
Olea is accused of abusing and taking advantage of two teenage girls. Investigators said the incidents involved a 16-year-old and 14-year-old and happened several years ago, between 2009 and 2012, while Olea was working as a gymnastics coach in Key Biscayne.
The alleged victims were Olea’s students at the time. They said he groomed them and then preyed on their vulnerabilities.
At Tuesday’s hearing, with Olea in court, the judge expressed disgust that the state was still not ready to extend its case further.
Defense attorneys said that the state just sent over four hours of recordings that were altered, not giving the defense enough time to review the material for Tuesday’s 11 a.m. hearing.
“It is getting a little ridiculous here, three times yesterday, your prosecutor told me out of concern for the safety and privacy of the victim, this case for all intents and purposes, through the state attorney’s office, is going forward in a public forum,” Judge Alberto Milian said.
A break was happening at around noon and the defense and prosecution were speaking to each other.
The judge will give defense attorneys time to go through the recordings, but proceedings are likely to be rescheduled until Wednesday.
