Florida City murders: Detectives investigate 2 murders in 2 days in same bus stop area

After shooting kills 25-year-old man, shooting nearby kills 30-year-old man

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – Richardo Sinclair Geathers had just celebrated his 30th birthday in January. A detective had to tell his mother he was dead early Tuesday morning in southern Miami-Dade County.

Detectives suspect Geathers got into an argument with someone at the Busway in Florida City before the shooting in the area of Northwest Fifth Avenue and 16 Street.

Geathers was shot in the head and upper torso before he was able to pull out his black pistol, a Beretta. Police officers found it in his minibackpack.

Officers reported finding Geathers lying on the roadway near his bicycle after a Shot Spotter detected three rounds were fired after 10:35 p.m. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel declared him dead.

About a block away, on Saturday, Patrick Smith fatally shot Martavis Cannon while the two were in a public transit bus traveling northbound on the Busway near Southwest 328 Street, according to police.

Cannon was 25 years old. Smith, 28, surrendered and confessed to shooting him but he said it was in self-defense. Smith is facing a second-degree murder charge.

The Miami-Dade Police Department released a “Seeking Homicide Information” flyer with Geather’s photograph. Detective Jerrad Ferguson asked anyone with information to call 305-471-2400 or Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
