Police: Miami Beach officer shot colleague by mistake in Venetian Isles

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A witness recorded a video of a Miami Beach police officer who was shot in the leg as a man who was allegedly having a mental health crisis resisted on Saturday in Venetian Isles.

The video shows two police officers on the Venetian Causeway, between the Di Lido and Rivo Alto islands, according to the Miami Beach Police Department.

Officer Christopher Bess, a spokesman for the department, said Miami police officers reported a “possibly armed suspect” was walking eastbound on the causeway.

It turned out the bullet that injured the police officer came from the colleague’s gun, police said.

Miami Beach fire rescue personnel used an ambulance to rush the police officer to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. The officer’s condition was stable, police said.

The officers detained the man and took him to a medical facility to undergo a mental health evaluation, police said.
