KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – The Key Biscayne gymnastics coach who was arrested last week on allegations of committing sex crimes against two of his students went before a judge on Monday.
Wearing a green anti-suicide vest, 38-year-old Oscar Olea was back in court facing multiple sexual battery charges for allegedly abusing and taking advantage of two teenage girls.
Investigators said the incidents involved a 16-year-old and 14-year-old and happened several years ago, between 2009 and 2012, while Olea was working as a gymnastics coach in Key Biscayne.
The alleged victims were Olea’s students at the time. They said he groomed them and then preyed on their vulnerabilities.
In the arrest warrants obtained by Local 10 News, the young girls told police he portrayed himself as a “big brother” and the only one who could “make them feel loved and valued” at a time when both of the alleged victims were being bullied.
Five days after Olea’s initial arrest last Tuesday, and for a second time, his pretrial release was rescheduled.
In court, the state told Judge Alberto Milan they needed more time to redact victim statements, and until that was complete, they were unable to turn that information over to the defense, or to Local 10, which has made official requests for those documents.
Olea’s defense attorney called the delays by the state a tactic to catch them off guard with evidence they wouldn’t have time to prepare for.
Ultimately, the hearing was rescheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Olea remains behind bars without bond.
