BSO: Unborn child dies after man ambushed mother in baseball bat attack

Emmanuel Prevaly, 34, now faces new charge

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A 34-year-old man arrested after deputies said he attacked the pregnant mother of his child in Pompano Beach is now facing an additional charge after the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Friday that the unborn baby later died.

Emmanuel Prevaly is accused of donning a mask and ambushing the woman in an apartment complex parking lot in the 1200 block of South Dixie Highway West last Friday, beating her repeatedly with a baseball bat.

Witnesses heard the woman screaming for help and Prevaly fled after seeing them come out to intervene, deputies said; one of the witnesses later wrestled him to the ground before deputies arrived. Authorities said the victim didn’t initially know Prevaly was the attacker.

Deputies said doctors “were unable to detect a heartbeat on the unborn child” and the Broward medical examiner later determined the fetus’ cause of death to be from “multiple blunt force injuries.”

That led authorities Thursday to charge Prevaly, who was already jailed on a count of attempted murder, with killing an unborn child.

He remains held without bond in the BSO Main Jail.
