DAVIE, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office held a promotions ceremony in Davie on Wednesday, honoring 250 employees.
There was also a special posthumous promotion that went to late Battalion Chief Terryson Jackson.
Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony knew Jackson personally for more than 14 years and got emotional when recognizing his fallen friend and colleague.
“He would have earned this no matter what obstacles would have been put in his way,” Tony said, pausing to collect himself. “I’m sorry, Terryson was a friend of mine.”
Jackson died last August after the BSO helicopter he was riding in crashed into a Pompano Beach apartment complex while responding to a call.
He was trapped in the crash and could not get out. A woman who was inside her apartment also died.
Two others in the chopper, a pilot and a paramedic, survived the crash.
Jackson began his career nearly 20 years ago, first with Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue in 2004 before joining BSO as a fire rescue lieutenant in 2011.
He was promoted to captain in 2016.
“He gave his life and service for this community, as many of us have done throughout this county’s history,” said Tony.
Wednesday was a special honor for a fallen hero who died doing what he loved.
“We haven’t forgotten, we will never forget, I will see to that,” said Tony.
Jackson is survived by his parents, son, daughter, and siblings.
