Charges dropped against former UM professor, family accused of sending equipment to Iran

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Federal charges have been dropped against a former University of Miami professor, his wife and his sister, who were all accused of sending genetic sequencing equipment to Iran, Local 10 News learned Wednesday.

The family was accused in 2021 of purchasing the equipment from U.S. manufacturers and illegally shipping it to Iran.

Court documents show that charges were dropped against Mohammad Faghihi in October of last year.

Documents show charges were dropped against both his wife, Farzeneh Modarresi and his sister, Faezeh Faghihi, in May 2022.

“We are immensely thankful that justice has prevailed, and we can now focus on our passion for medical science without the weight of these accusations,” Mohammad Faghihi said in a statement released by a spokesperson. “We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our legal team, family, and friends who have supported us through this challenging time.”

According to press release, Mohammad Faghihi “has dedicated his career to unraveling the complexities of the human genome and its implications in neurological disorder” and is a “revered figure in the field of medical genetics, renowned for his pioneering work on non-coding RNAs and their significant role in gene regulation and epigenetics.”
