MIAMI – A Broward County Public Schools teacher needs help. The United Nations invited a group of her students to participate in an annual meeting on the status of women next month.

The group of West Broward High School students in Pembroke Pines are members of an after-school club that focuses on learning about the principles of the UN.

Erica Carlino, a social studies teacher at West Broward High School and the club’s sponsor, has been preparing to travel with her students on March 11-15 to New York.

“They will have the opportunity to influence the ‘Girl Statement’, an international outcome document to improve access to girls’ education & healthcare, prevention of violence, and eradication of poverty, with 192 countries from around the world,” Carlino wrote in a statement.

Carlino reported she has been helping her students “to review UN documents and connect with other high school students from around the country since January” but not all of them have the financial means to accept the UN invitation.

“The students have been fundraising to offset travel costs and lodging,” Carlino wrote asking the public to help sponsor their trip by donating on the school’s website.

The school will provide any business owner who chooses to donate over $50 with a plaque to hang on a wall, a gift, and a copy of the West Broward school newspaper with the headline, according to Carlino.

“Your donation will help support the academic and professional development of Broward County High School students, and help advance the lives of girls from around the world,” Carlino wrote.

The UN’s 68th Commission on the Status of Women is from March 11-22.
