2 men shot during block party in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday night during a block party.

According to authorities, officers responded to the 800 block of Northwest Eighth Avenue, an area lined with warehouses, just after 8:45 p.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter alert.

Police said they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Surveillance video from a nearby business shows people running and ducking for cover moments after shots ring out.

“I was here and I just hear, ‘pop, pop, pop’ -- like about eight or about 10 or 12 shots fired,” witness Delray Lewis said. “I see people running and getting low from the shots ... and they they said ‘somebody just got shot.’”

About 1,000 people were attending the block party at the time and had to be cleared from the scene to allow Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews to get to the victims, authorities said.

Police said both victims were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where one of the victims is listed in serious but stable condition.

Police said the other victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and told detectives he does not wish to prosecute anyone connected to the shooting.

The shooter or shooters fled the scene before officers arrived.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has more information is asked to call the Fort Lauderdale Police Department or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
