HOLLYWOOD, Fla. ā Police are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning in the middle of a Hollywood neighborhood.
āBrrrr, bam, bam, bam, bam -- it was crazy, like mayhem. I thought I was at war or something,ā Jeremy Phillips, who lives in the neighborhood, said.
The shooting was reported just after 12:30 a.m. along McClellan Street and North 24th Avenue.
āIt had to be assault rifles,ā Phillips said. āThose things were loud, like it was vibrations.ā
The gunfire left one man dead and sent a second person to the hospital.
Detectives are still trying to figure out who fired off the deadly shots.
āI jumped up and I heard the shots,ā Phillips said. āI laid on the floor for a second and I was like, āMan, were those gunshots?āā
Neighbors who heard the gunfire are now calling for an end to the senseless violence.
āThis is something that is normal, itās crazy over here,ā Phillips said. āYouāve got this street and the next street over, they always have confrontations. Itās just too much. Youāve got kids around.ā
Police confirmed that the surviving victim was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition.
A man who lives in the area identified the victim who was killed to Local 10 News as Jim White, who he said went by the nickname JB.
He said White was from West Palm Beach and was sitting in his car with his girlfriend when the shooter pulled up in another car and opened fire.
āThat was no gun,ā Renard Biennesein said. āIt was a machine gun. Because when I wake up, I pass by the car -- more than eight bullets.ā
The shooter fled the scene prior to officers arriving.
No other details were immediately released by police.
