PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – There will soon be a new top cop at the Pembroke Pines Police Department.

The department announced on Tuesday that Chief Kipp Shimpeno is retiring next week.

Shimpeno worked at Pines PD for 29 years.

He joined the force as a patrol officer in 1994, and earned promotions to Captain and Major before becoming Chief in 2019.

Major Jose J. Vargas has been tapped to be the 10th Police Chief in Pembroke Pines history.

Vargas has worked at the department since 2001, serving in a variety of positions from patrol officer to traffic homicide investigator to crisis negotiator.

Vargas will be sworn-in as Chief during a promotion’s ceremony at City Hall on Wednesday.
